Georgia Advocacy Office, Inc. (GAO) is a private, federally-funded non-profit corporation. Our mission is to work with and for oppressed and vulnerable individuals in Georgia who are labeled as disabled or mentally ill to secure their protection and advocacy. The GAO provides a wide range of services to persons with disabilities in Georgia. Some examples of the services we provide, but not limited to, are: information and referral, advice and support in self-advocacy, assistance in advocacy, negotiation, or mediation on behalf of individuals, investigations of abuse, neglect, or violation of rights, education regarding the needs and rights of people with disabilities, and identification of problems in the system of service delivery and advocacy for systemic change.
The GAO supports people with disabilities in Georgia to transition from state hospitals and nursing facilities into the community with appropriate services and supports. Among other things, the GAO advocates for people with disabilities in Georgia to be free from discrimination in healthcare, employment, voting, and education. The GAO encourages and supports the use of self-advocacy by people with disabilities.
